課程概述

New media studies and (the predominantly German-initiated) media theory have come along to recast the terms of conversations in the humanities, urging us to rethink the interrelations between technical media (or technicity in general) and the human condition. While these emerging fields are posing important questions in their own right, they are also noteworthy in the ways in which they inspire new methodologies in literary studies. This course aims to examine how these theoretical propositions help us reconsider the ways in which literature embodies or responds to epistemic frameworks and changes in the physical world. Literary works are not to be taken merely as thematic clusters or representations of political ideologies and identitarian alignments; they are to be understood as complex intersections of the textual world and the outside world, as material manifestation of processes of mediation. Contemporary media theory is illuminating particularly in helping us broach “medium” broadly, allowing us to approach critically and innovatively not only media technologies but also all sorts of “medial objects.” In brief, this course is interested in the technically mediated experience manifest in literature.

**The class is to be conducted in English. A different arrangement may be possible depending on the makeup of the students.
**Sitting in on the class may be allowed on condition of regular attendance. Email the instructor beforehand to inquire.

課程目標
We will read substantially some of the thought-provoking writings in contemporary theory of medium, including new media studies, theory of cultural techniques, and what may be termed “the medial approach” advanced by literary critics. Theoretical debates aside, we will also study primary texts by prominent modern and contemporary writers including Henry James, Franz Kafka, and Samuel Beckett, and use them for our critical and theoretical practice. In addition to close reading of these theoretical and literary texts, the course will also offer an overview of some of the latest studies in medium and media related topics in the humanities.
課程要求
Requirements:

1. Conscientious preparation, regular attendance, and active class participation. No more than three absences.

2. Two sessions of “discussion facilitation.” Sign up for two sessions of discussion facilitation and prepare discussion questions on the reading materials of the week. Discussion facilitation is not meant to be an oral presentation where you summarize the reading. Rather, you should raise questions about parts of the reading you find noteworthy. Make hardcopies of your questions for the class. Length requirement for each question sheet: 250-400 words. (Note: the number of discussion facilitation required of each student may be adjusted according to the size of the class.)

3. Two “think pieces.” During the semester, turn in reading responses to any two pieces of critical or theoretical writing (i.e., not the primary texts) we study this semester. The selection must not overlap with the readings you conduct discussion facilitation on. You can either summarize the main points in your own words, or jut down whatever comes to mind in your reading and thinking process. Turn them in any time during the semester, no later than the last class meeting. Word count: at least 250 words each.

4. Term paper. Word count (exclusive of notes and bibliography): 3,500 words minimum for M.A. students; 5,500 words minimum for Ph.D. students. An abstract of 250 words is due in Week 16; an individual meeting with the instructor will be scheduled for Week 17.
